So you want to sew....where to start

I wanted to create this post for my newbies while this is fresh in my mind - since I am not far from it.

So here are some of tools I started out with as a newbie.

1.  The obvious tool would be - a sewing machine.

I advise that you not go out and buy the most expensive machine on you first go out.  My first machine is this Brothers Sewing Machine.  That was about 19 years ago.  I had it sitting around longer than I was using it.  Believe I still use it as my fall back machine.

The reason for me saying don't go out and buy an expensive machine is.  I want you to make sure that you invest in a purchase that you will use often.   When I purchased this machine, I wasn't sure and I was right in this purchase.  I brought the machine home, opened it, made a few skirts, then pushed it to the side for about a year or two.  When I decided to take up sewing for real, I had to search for it in the basement.   Now that I've been sewing for a few years, I've upgraded my machine, but old Susie is still alive and well and still being used.

I have since purchased and use the Singer Sew Mate 5400.

My latest upgrade is a Project Runway Edition.  To see the unboxing of this machine, click HERE.  I have yet to use this machine yet.

So here's some other tools that I purchased in my beginning days. Most of which you can purchase from your local Joann fabrics or Walmart.

  • Tape measure
  • Clear plastic ruler
  • Fabic scissors
  • Paper scissors
  • Stick pins ( you want a lot of these)
  • Safety pins (just a few)
  • Tracing Paper
  • Notions ( thread, Marking pens, seam ripper, marking wheel, tailor chalk)
  • Fabric weights
  • Cutting mat
A lot of these items you can already find in a kit assembled for you like this ONE for example.

**As I mentioned before, do go out and buy the most expensive machine first.  At least, not until you know that sewing is for you and you will get plently of use from your machine.**
